Hi there and thanks for stopping by! If you love hearty delicious French onion soup then you’ve come to the right place!
I know what you’re thinking, 20 hours?!? But stay with me. About 19.5 of those hours are left to the hard work of your trusty crock pot. There’s only a few steps of slicing and mixing and adding ingredients and voila, restaurant quality French onion soup.
The key is to start the soup the next before you plan on enjoying it for dinner. Usually when I’m cleaning up dinner the night before I slice up the onions (David did this time around-thanks honey!) and make sure to triple layer some paper towel underneath the lid to make the smell a little less strong.
The next morning you add a bunch of ingredients and let it cook all day again. 30 minutes before you’re ready to eat pour in some red wine (and pour a glass for yourself) and that’s it! Make sure to top it with some crusty bread and cheese (we love a mix of mozzarella and Gruyere) and pop it under the broiler for about 5 minutes before serving. Also note this recipe makes a TON of soup, but it freezes really well.
Without further ado, here’s the recipe:
French Onion Soup-
Ingredients-
3 lbs onions, sliced into rings
1/2 stick butter
1 Tbsp flour
2 Tbsp Worcestershire sauce
2 Tbsp sugar
1 Tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp black pepper
4 c low sodium chicken stock
4 c low sodium beef stock
1/2 cup red wine
Method-
-The night before, slice up the onions and add to crock pot with butter and sugar. Triple layer paper towels underneath the lid and set on low for 12 hours.
-Mix all remaining ingredients except for the wine into crock pot and set on low for 8 more hours.
-30 minutes before serving add in the red wine and give it a taste for additional seasoning.
-In oven safe bowls, ladle the soup and top with crusty bread and grated cheese. Broil on high for about 5 minutes. (I place our mugs on a cookie sheet in the oven)
Enjoy!
