Founded in 1849 in Paris, Moynat was founded 5 years before Louis Vuitton. At the time, travel was reserved for those who could could afford such luxury. Trips were usually months long voyages, often on steam trains, and trunks were vital to safely transport one’s possessions.
The brand was founded by Pauline Moynat, along with Octavie and François Coulembier, and to this day she was the only woman in a male-dominated trunk making industry.
Moynat continued making trunks up through the 1970’s when the brand halted production. In 2010, LVMH acquired and breathed new life into the brand.
Moynat still makes travel trunks, but now offers a line of tote bags and accessories as well. They’re under the radar but still possess exceptional quality. They don’t have catalogs full of styles, what they make is simple and perfectly made.
I contacted the South Coast Plaza location and worked with a wonderful sales associate over the phone to place my order. I wanted to dip my toe into the brand and chose the Rubin Pouch in coated canvas in the MM size and the Carbone Silver color. I've been using it as a catch all inside my larger bags, and even as a chic wallet or a small clutch for a night out on the town. I just adore the metallic “M” print, eye catching yet understated.
Service and shipping were prompt, it arrived beautifully packaged, and the prices are so much more reasonable than Louis Vuitton and Goyard (although quality is just as good if not slightly better).
I am enjoying my pouch very much and would recommend Moynat to anyone looking for quality, handmade leather goods. I can’t wait to try a tote next. A custom order would be a total dream come true!
